Connecting across cultures.

Erika Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, speaks to students about study abroad opportunities in Panama.

Spanish is the world’s second most prominent language, and the United States is the world’s fourth largest Spanish speaking country; here in Allentown, the surrounding community is 58 percent Hispanic, with a population of Latinos and Hispanic immigrants that is one of the nation’s most diverse.

This means Spanish students at Muhlenberg  are uniquely equipped for the challenges and opportunities of a globalized world and our own ever-more diverse communities. The ability to make connections across cultures, the capacity to read Spanish media and literature, aptitudes for critical thinking and global awareness—these are vital skills in today’s economy and society.

As a Spanish major or minor at Muhlenberg, you’ll acquire or advance your Spanish communication skills while deepening your understanding of Spanish-language literatures and cultures. Your studies will come alive through experiential learning opportunities including study abroad, independent projects, community engagement, dynamic events and more. You’ll graduate equipped to pursue diverse opportunities for graduate studies or professional employment.
