Students in Dr. Kassandra Hartford’s Music & Gender course present a series of short talks introducing issues historically faced by women and gender non-binary composers and performers:
September 15, 2020 - The Choirs and the Music Department hosted Melissa Dunphy (composer) and Phillip Cheah (conductor) for a discussion about their recent world premier, Set Myself Free, a choral work written in commemoration of the 19th Amendment and the continued struggles women face in modern society. The discussion covered a variety of topics, including the experience of Women in Composition, how to create meaningful art during Covid, and how diversity impacts the field of classical music.
November 11, 2020 - The Choirs will host composer, Mari Valverde, to discuss the experiences of Women in music. Valverde has written choral music with a particular emphasis on setting the poetry of LGBTQ poets and on universal topics that carry meaning for all people, regardless of their race, gender, or sexual orientation.
