Philosophy Faculty and Staff

Professor Doviak joined Muhlenberg College in the Fall of 2009 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Philosophy and Business Administration. Professor Doviak regularly teaches courses in business ethics, business and society, formal logic, and introductory ethics.   He also teaches environmental philosophy, epistemology, and a variety of first year seminars, including “Happiness: The Philosophy and Science of Human Flourishing,” “Decisions, Decisions,” and “Fairness: Theory and Practice”.  At Muhlenberg, Doviak has directed a wide range of student research projects, including honors theses and summer research grants. Each Spring, Professor Doviak advises Muhlenberg teams at the DeSales Business Ethics Bowl and the CFA Institute’s Ethics in Finance challenge, sponsored by Ursinus College.

Professor Doviak’s current research interests include the fair division of scarce resources and CSR performance measurement. He is also actively working on empirically--driven best practices for teaching business ethics case studies.  Doviak’s published and presented works include "Virtue, Satisfaction, and Welfare Enhancement" (Utilitas), “A New Form of Agent-based Virtue Ethics” (Ethical Theory and Moral Practice), a “A Measure of Justice”( OZSW Dutch Research School of Philosophy),  “Claims, Reasons, and Degrees of Fairness”, (Midsouth Philosophy Conference), “Risk, Claims, and Consent”, (Great Lakes Philosophy Conference), “Fair Allocation and Mixed Risk Preference (Ohio Philosophical Association)  “On the Nature of Claims and Their Role in Fair Division Problems” (the Long Island Philosophical Society), and “A Decision Procedure for Ethical Dilemmas in Business Ethics Case Studies”  (Teaching of Ethics Conference, Fort Lewis College).
