Center for Ethics Screens “Nothing Like Chocolate” Filmmaker to Participate in Public Discussion and Student Workshop
The film “Nothing Like Chocolate,” which tells the story of Mott Green, founder of the Grenada Chocolate Company, will be screened as part of the Center for Ethics series Market\Values on Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Trumbower Hall, Room 130.Tuesday, November 13, 2012 09:58 AM
The screening will be followed by a discussion by the film’s filmmaker Kum-Kum Bhavnani, professor of sociology at University of California at Santa Barbara. This event is free and open to the public.
Earlier in the day, Bhavani will offer a workshop to students, “Ethics and Social Justice: Spreading the Word Through Video,” from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. in the Walson Hall Video Studio
Bhavnani describes herself as a university professor by day and a filmmaker by night. Her earlier award-winning film “The Shape of Water,” narrated by Susan Sarandon, has been shown throughout the world. “Nothing like Chocolate” is her second film, chronicling the hopeful story of anarchist and chocolatier Mott Green, whose chocolate company brought ethical labor and sustainable environmental practices to a global industry that is plagued by enslaved child labor and tasteless, synthetic products. He utilizes solar power, employee shareholding and small-scale antique equipment to make good-quality chocolate in Hermitage, Grenada. The film documents the continued growth of the Grenada Chocolate Company and also shows Green’s journey as he struggles to convince chocolate distributers in the UK and USA that his company’s chocolate is the best in the world.
Market\Values is co-directed by Sue Curry Jansen, professor of media and communications, Mohsin Hashim, associate professor of political science, and Marcia Morgan, assistant professor of philosophy. The goal of the Center for Ethics’ programming is to engage the community in intensive and reflective thinking about individual and collective values.
